Here are the best Point Guard prospects for the 2011 NBA Draft. Kyrie Irving
Some project Kyrie to be the Number 1 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. The charismatic freshman has all the tools to be the next great point guard in the NBA. He is a great passer, doesn’t force shots, and possesses good fundamentals. He has the speed and first step to blow by his defender in a one-on-one situation, has good form on his shot with 3-point range, is solid defender, and has excellent ball handling skills. Along with those tools he also is a great finisher around the rim with both hands. Even though he only played 8 games this year due to injury he showed that he is far more advanced and will be able to play on the next level.
Kemba Walker
Despite starting the season unranked, Kemba led a very young team to 3 tournament championships (Maui Invitational, Big East Championship, National Championship) this season. He has excellent ball handling skills, good form on his shot, rebounds well for his size, and is a tremendous finisher in the paint. The special thing about Kemba is the intangibles he brings to the court. His speed and change of direction is second to none, he has shown great leadership this season, has a great motor, is superb in the clutch, and gives his all every game. These “intangibles” will help make Kemba’s transition from college to the pros a smooth one.
Brandon Knight
High motor, hard worker, great student, incredible speed, fierce competitor, and has a strong passion for the game. Here is another guy who benefits from the intangibles he has. Skill wise, Knight is still improving on becoming a true point guard. Right now he is more of a scorer, he can shoot the ball well off the dribble, has good range on his 3 point shot, can score in one-on-one situations, has shown ability to run the pick and roll effectively, and has improved his passing ability. Knight’s draft stock rose during the tournament when he helped lead the Kentucky Wildcats to the Final Four, hitting game winners against Princeton and Ohio State.
Jimmer Fredette
Everyone fell in love with the “Jimmer Story” this season. Jimmer Fredette led the nation in scoring and put up several 40 and 50 point games during his career. He has shown that he has unbelievable range on his shot, pulling from 35-40 feet on several occasions. Fredette led a mediocre BYU team to the Sweet 16. His scoring ability will help him get to the league but he must improve on basically everything else to have any chance on a long NBA career.
